THINKING LIKE AN ISLAND

L’Île est éloignée en mer Méditerranée et culmine à 675 mètres. Elle est habitée par un nombre incertain de 30 à 60 personnes tout au long de l’année, sans hôpital, sans voitures, sans prêtres ni policiers. Certains habitants n’envisagent jamais de partir tandis que d’autres ont essayé, pour finalement revenir à leur vie dans cette bulle isolée. Il y a des histoires innombrables, des arbres généalogiques complexes et un savoir historique entourant la communauté qui vit de pains enrichis de substances hallucinogènes. Enveloppé dans une structure de livre « non conventionnelle », Penser comme une Île réfléchit à un espace géographique, social et temporel, à un système et à sa logique mobile. Évitant la représentation typique d’une île comme utopie ou dystopie, cette œuvre examine le processus continu de construction de l’identité : affrontement et coexistence, choix et confinement, innovation et résistance. L’expérience se révèle stratifiée, plurielle et dense ; un vertige de complexité croissante.

The Island is distant in the Mediterranean sea, and 675 metres in height. It’s inhabited by an uncertain number of 30 to 60 people, year-round, with no hospital, no cars, no priests or police. Some islanders never consider leaving while others tried, only to return to their lives in the remote bubble. There are untold stories, complex family trees, and historical lore surrounding the community existing on loaves of hallucinogenic-laced bread.

Bound into an ‘unconventional’ book structure, Thinking like an Island reflects on a geographical, social and temporal space, on a system and its moveable logic. Avoiding the typical representation of an island as utopia or dystopia, this work looks at the continuous process of identity construction; clash and coexistence, choice and confinement, innovation and resistance. The experience proves to be stratified, plural and dense; a vertigo of increasing complexity.
