Il existe aujourd’hui de nombreux territoires autoproclamés indépendants, mais non reconnus par la communauté internationale. The Lines We Draw explore ces zones grises à travers une enquête photographique sensible et documentée, questionnant ce qui fonde l’identité d’un pays — et de ses habitants.
À travers un voyage imaginaire dans cinq territoires réels (Transnistrie, Catalogne, Artsakh, Chypre du Nord et Sahara occidental), Lavinia Parlamenti et Manfredi Pantanella interrogent les notions d’autodétermination, de frontière et de nationalité dans un monde où les identités deviennent de plus en plus hybrides.
Le livre met en parallèle les fondements des identités personnelles (naissance, mort, nom, rites de passage) et ceux des identités nationales (paysages, folklore, gastronomie, figures historiques), tissant un récit visuel où l’individuel et le collectif se répondent.
Conçu par la designer Ania Nalecka-Milach, l’ouvrage juxtapose ces récits sans les hiérarchiser, brouillant les lignes établies pour mieux interroger leur légitimité. The Lines We Draw ne documente pas seulement des territoires méconnus : il ouvre une réflexion sur les identités qui persistent au-delà des reconnaissances officielles.

Today, many self-declared independent territories remain unrecognized by the international community. The Lines We Draw explores these grey areas through a sensitive and well-documented photographic investigation, questioning what defines a country — and its people.
Through an imaginary journey across five real territories (Transnistria, Catalonia, Artsakh, Northern Cyprus, and Western Sahara), Lavinia Parlamenti and Manfredi Pantanella examine notions of self-determination, borders, and nationality in a world where identities are becoming increasingly hybrid.
The book draws parallels between the foundations of personal identity (birth, death, name, rites of passage) and those of national identity (landscapes, folklore, cuisine, historical figures), weaving a visual narrative where the personal and collective reflect one another.
